First Steps Taken in the Creation of a Canadian Sport Pony Registry

We have received very exciting information on the creation of a new inclusive Canadian organization to support the breeding and development of all sport horse and pony breeds in Canada. The planning is in the preliminary stages and many people are required for various phases of the organization to volunteer their knowledge and time to create a unified group which will be known as Sport Horse Canada. The attached document outlines the Committees that will be necessary. Alana Longman will be the coordinator for Sport Pony Canada. Please contact Alana if you would like to be involved on behalf of Sport Ponies. This is an excellent opportunity to shape the future of Canadian bred Sport Ponies. She would like to receive information on improvements that you feel would be required for the registry or the testing procedures.

Please contact Alana Longman to become involved or to generate ideas at 306-656-2051 or e-mail alana@ch-equestrian.com

Thanks very much,

Sport Horse Canada Principles and Processes.doc

Dear Alana,
On behalf of the Joint Committee of the proposed Sport Horse Canada, Kim
Berlie and I are pleased to invite Sport Pony Breeders to participate in
discussions to map out a method for closer cooperation amongst Canadian
breeders of horses and ponies for FEI and related disciplines.

Attached is a document outlining the results of our first meeting. We
achieved strong consensus that our primary goal is to see a vibrant and
viable breeding industry here in Canada. We feel that together we can
accomplish great things.

Participation at this point, does not mean a commitment, however, we
value the input of all breeders and feel that early participation will
ensure that your needs are properly addressed. We think that Sport
Ponies should be part of the process. There is a growing demand for an
international calibur pony breeding program in Canada and we know that
you and others have taken the lead in working towards this goal.

If you agree to be part of this, we will need to appoint four people to
sit on the Joint Committee which is overseeing the process. We will also
need to appoint an additional two people per committee to sit on three
working groups, as outlined in the attached document. We know that there
are a number of people who have serious interest in Sport Pony breeding;
people such as Cathy Chalak and Dana Young. I would be very interested
to talk to you about how to best populate these committees.

A grant application has been submitted to Agriculture and Agr-Foods
Canada, for financial support for this project. It will not be 100%, so
there will be some financial requirement to support your
representatives, however we hope that in kind contributions will be
accepted (volunteer hours), to match government contributions.

We hope that you will give this proposal serious consideration. Both the
Canadian Sport Horse Association and the Canadian Warmblood Horse
Breeders Association Boards have given their approval to proceed and we
feel there is growing enthusiasm for the future of this project.

We look forward to hearing from you soon.

Regards,
Chris Gould,
Kim Berlie,
Joint Committee Coordinators
